My father was a vickers machine gunner with the 2/9th Battalion (18th Brigade)- Peter Murphy QX218. He enlisted on day one and fought all of the battles with that Battalion from the siege of Tobruk onwards. He said out of all of the battles he found Shaggy Ridge to be the toughest battle he was involved in. Although obviously not the longest battle;Tobruk being the longest. But he refers to the intensity of the action within that short period. Sanananda a close second for intensity.

My Grandfather served with the 2/12th AIF. I have been researching the 2/12th War Diaries and planning a trip to the area next year. I believe comment #1 refers to the battle for Kanikiro Saddle on the 23rd January 1944.
B Coy at 1800 hrs reports to have found a 75mm gun position with 150 rounds of ammunition along with several pillboxes. The assault on this position had begun at 0240hrs. Please see the AWM website for detailed diaries of the events at Shaggy Ridge: 2/12th War Diary January 1944 Item Number 8/3/12.

My father was an artillery signaller on Shaggy Ridge and got wounded by Jap shellfire. As a sugnaller he had a wireless set and was listening to the 7 pm ABC Radio News when the shell burst in a tree above his fox hole. Our family still has that bit of shrapnel the surgeons removed from his face. It is a horrid souvenir.

This story came alive when I walked Shaggy Ridge and Crater Hill in July/August 2010. Evidence of the battles lies all along the Ridge and on Crater Hill. Our group unearthed a 75 mm Japanese gun just north of the Kankiryo Saddle. I couldn't think of a worse place to fight a war. The men who served there in 1943/44 were heroes. Bob ""Shaggy"" Clampett died and was buried in Adelaide on 20 August 2010.
